The Black headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) is a common sight in the parks of the UK, but is currently an amber listed bird of conservation concern. Paul Baker wanted to understand them better. He had been ringing Black headed gulls in Glasgow during the winter. Following two reports of ringed birds being seen in Victoria and Knightswood Parks, then two hours later at other parks in Glasgow he realised if he wanted to find out what proportion of the gulls present in Glasgow were being ringed it would require the simultaneous counting of all locations to avoid double counting.
