A dozen of us met in Glasgow in November 2018 and discussed how SOC could engage with more young people. Out of this meeting, the SOC Youth Connect group was born. Primarily communicating via a private Facebook page (you can ask to join), it has 48 Members as of December 2021. Members are generally under 30 with some in their early teens.
The idea of the group is to connect young people with others interested in birds and ornithology, and sharing opportunities for grants, scholarships, training, volunteering, mentoring, apprenticeships, jobs, ‘behind the scenes’ looks at projects & institutions, etc. Building confidence, developing skills, exchanging experiences, celebrating achievements, networking, socialising and making new friends are very much part of our aims.
Relevant events, including local branch activities are advertised on our Facebook page. People can also offer books, journals or equipment that are surplus to their own requirements.
