Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus

Reports were of a ♂ on Inchtavannach 9 Jan, a ♂ Inchconnachan 18 Feb, and 3 (1 ♂) on Inchmoan 18 Feb (EB,HB). The census on the four Loch Lomond islands was called off due to FMD restrictions, but a brood count produced 5 broods totalling 10 young on 19-20 July (CMW et al).

Ptarmigan Lagopus muta

Reports were all on Ben Lomond: 4 on 18 Feb, 2 on 27 May (FH), a pr b/2 on 23 June (ECD), 6 juvs on 15 Aug (AE), and 2 on 4 Sep (ECD).

 

Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus

Winter-spring reports included 2 Misty Law 11 Jan (ECD), 9 Whitelee Forest at Ardochrig 19 Jan (FG), 2 Burncrooks Resr 20 Jan, 1 Carron Valley Resr 2 Feb (GJB).

Breeding season reports involved 8 Carman Hill 17 Apr (JAD,JCD), several calling ♂♂ Ardochrig 16 May (FG), a poor season Mistylaw, Queenside and Duchal Moors, low nos of breeding adults and very poor productivity (IPG), and 1 bird Little Saughen Brae, Kilpatrick Braes 3 July (ADW). Reports of broods involved a ♀ with almost full-grown b/4 Gall Moss 13 July (IPG), and a pr b/5 Carron Valley Resr 12 June (GJB).

Autumn-winter reports included 6 Queenside Muir 29 Aug, 8 Whitelees Moor 6 Sep (ECD), 4 Carron Valley Resr 11 Sep (GJB), 8 Craig Minnan 24 Sep (ECD), 2 Fannyside Lochs 15 Oct (ADW,AJY), 4 prs Tinto on 12 Dec (SRi), and 6 on the Kilpatrick Braes on 22 Dec (FH).

 

Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa

Reports were of 2 Crow Road, Lennoxtown 28 Apr (JLT), 250 released Endrick Mouth in July (per JM), 1 there on 6 Aug (GJB), 4 Garvald Quarry 8 Sep (HEMD), 5 on 28 Sep (AMcA), and 6 at Westfield on 7 Oct (RDM).

 

Grey Partridge Perdix perdix

Winter-spring reports included 2 Brownsfield I E on 10 Jan (ECD), 3 Bridge of Weir-Kilmacolm cycle path 8 Feb (WB), 8 Allander Toll 9 Feb (TPD), 1 Millichen Flood 21 Feb, 2 on 14 Mar (GJB), and a ♂ calling at Balgray Resr on 2 Feb (JJS).

Breeding season reports were of 2 prs Cardowan Moss (SL), a pr at Millichen Flood on 4 Apr and 8 June, 1 West Ferry 13 Apr (GJB), and a pr at Loch Ardinning on 24 Apr (DAC).

Autumn-winter reports included 3 Possil Marsh 3 Nov (JJM), 8 on the Cardowan colliery landscaped bing 31 Oct (FJM), 4 Millichen Flood 11 Oct, 7 on 9 Nov, 8 on 27 Nov (GJB), 2 Greengairs 8 Dec (JJM), 3 Dillarburn 16 Dec (JND,ADW), 8 Town of Inchinnan 29 Dec (ECD), and 3 at Baads, Forrestburn Resr on 29 Dec (JND,ADW).

 

Quail Coturnix coturnix

Reports involved a calling ♂ at Cloch Point Caravan Park around 0330 hrs on 9 July (FG), then nearby one flushed on an upland bog 200 metres northeast of Crawhin Resr on 14 July (IPG), and single(s) calling at two separate locations at Cashel on 10 July and 13 July (MCR).

 

Pheasant Phasianus colchicus

Reports included counts of 11 at Garvald Quarry 17 Mar (AMcA), 30 along B832 Helensburgh-A82 Loch Lomond road on 22 Mar (JTT), 24 Endrick Mouth 9 Oct, an albino individual there on 24 Dec (JTT), and 56 at Barscube Hill on 31 Oct (DSF). Breeding reports included a ♀ with b/3 Mugdock Country Park 10 July (AMcN), and a ♀ b/3 Baron's Haugh 29 July (JJM).

 

Brent Goose Branta bernicla

All reports were of pale-bellied B b hrota: 4 at Lunderston Bay on 30 Sep (FG), possibly same 4 at Rhu 2-5 Oct (HS,PC,JAP-M), presumed 3 of same flock on shore at Lithgow yard Port Glasgow 7 Oct (ADW), 1 Carstairs 7 Oct (RDM), and 1 in Ardmore North Bay on 26 Oct (JTT).

 

Canada Goose Branta canadensis

Breeding season reports included 2 prs Bishop Loch, b/3 on 26 June (GCC), 6 prs Loch Thom 1‑7 Apr, flock 19 ads 1 July (IPG), 3 prs incl 1 pr with nest Broadwood Loch 16 Apr (JND,ADW). The following breeding pairs were reported:

Winter-spring reports involved 1 at the Endrick Mouth on 26 Jan (GJB), 3 Kilmaronock 8 Feb (JAD,JCD), 3 on 12 Apr (JTT), 1 with Canada Geese Loch Thom 11 Feb (JND,ADW), 1 Millichen Flood 11 Feb, 6 on 22 Feb (TPD et al), and 18 in the South Medwin valley on 12 Feb (JSW,VW).

Autumn-winter reports were of 40 E over Dumbarton Rock on 26 Sep (DLC), 1 N over Harelaw Dam 4 Oct (JSW,VW), 1 Balgray Resr 6 Oct (PHB,DLC), 5 Bankhead Pool 7 Oct, 2 Wester Walston 7 Oct (RDM), 10 Ravenstruther 8 Oct, 12 Cormiston Towers and 5 Pettinain 3 Nov (JSW,VW), 4 Hillhead Farm 4 Nov, 4 on 22 Nov (EB,HB et al), 5 on 28 Nov, 12 Gallangad Farm 27 Nov, 5 on 1 Dec, 14 on 30 Dec (JAD,JCD), 1 Endrick Mouth 15 Nov (HB,JCD), 3 Shandon, Drymen 12 Dec (NB), 1 with Canada Geese Reivoch 15 Dec (IPG), and 7 at Millichen Flood 22‑28 Dec, still 1 on 29-31 Dec (JJM,TPD et al).

Feral birds included 10 at Knapps Loch on 9 Mar, 16 on 12 Mar (ADW), 4 prs Loch Thom island 25 Mar-1 Apr, 32 Shielhill Farm/Loch Thom 29 Apr (IPG), 22 on 15 July (MMcG). Breeding reports involved 4 prs, a single and 2 groups of 4 Loch Thom 7 May (JND,ADW), 2 prs and 8 birds Douglas Estate 20 May (ADW), a pr b/1 on Loch Thom island 7 July (MMcG), 3 prs b/4, b/4, b/5 Carbeth Loch 14 June, and a pr b/2 at Craigallian Loch on 14 June (GJB). The moult flock of feral birds at Hogganfield Loch built up from 252 on 27 June, to 269 on 5 July (GCC), 278 on 10 July (CRS), falling to 160 on 23 July (GCC); other flock counts included 80 Lochend Loch 28 June (CL), 22 Loch Thom 8 July (ECD), and 180 at Millichen Flood 17 Aug (AMcN).

Autumn passage involved 30 over High Banton 24 Sep (PGC), 61 Drymen 28 Sep (JAD,JCD), 27 over Lochwinnoch Reserve on 11 Oct (RSPB), 31 W over Mugdock Country Park on 18 Oct (AMcN), 14 S then W high over Strathgryfe at 1725 hrs on 27 Oct (IPG,ADW), 32 W over Darleith on 27 Oct (FL), and 14 W over Cloch Point at 1620 hrs on 31 Oct (FG).

Taiga Bean Goose Anser fabalis

Winter-spring reports were of 146 Fannyside Mill 5 Jan, 176 Blackhill 13 Jan, 100+ on 31 Jan, 43 Easter Fannyside 22 Jan, 150 Blackhill 28 Jan, 180 on 29 Jan, 60 on 9 Feb, 64 N over Greengairs 11 Feb (per BS). Winter-spring counts (per BGWG,AM):

The first birds arrived back on 24 Sep, but numbers did not increase until 19 Oct with 79 at Beam Farm (Forth). 192 birds on 3 Nov at Blackhill was the highest flock total so far. The numbers remained constant till the year end. Autumn-winter counts (per BGWG,AM):

Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus

Winter-spring Clydesdale counts included 22 Greenhill, Kirkfieldbank (new area) 28 Jan (JND, ADW), 5000 Ravenstruther 12 Feb, 2000 Swaites Hill 12 Feb (JSW,VW), 1500 (incl a leucistic individual) Biggar Water Floods 18 Feb, 2300 The Meetings 18 Feb, 550 Westhall Farm 18 Feb (JND,ADW), 3000 Thankerton 2 Mar, and 2000 at Bankhead on 19 Apr, 80 on 1 May (JET).

Reports elsewhere during the period were of 1 at Erskine 12 Jan-7 May (ECD et al), 100 Endrick Mouth 29 Jan (RKP), 8 Blackfaulds Farm 9 Feb, 14 on 13 Mar (GCC), 332 Easter Lumloch 12 Feb, 386 on 8 Mar (IPG), 450 Mavie Hill 24 Feb (EB,HB et al), 150+ Auchinleck 11 Apr (IPG), and 7 with Greylags Auchendores Resr 8-15 Apr (IPG,ADW). Spring passage reports included 500 NE over High Banton 11 Mar, 150 on 24 Apr (PGC), 86 Kilmaronock 11 Apr (JAD, JCD), 32 over Lochwinnoch 21 Apr (per JSW,VW), and 80 N over Ballochruin on 24 Apr (GJB).

White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons

All Greenland race flavirostris.

Summary: 69 nesting pairs reported from 60 sites, with a mean brood size of 2.5 young/pair (cf. an average mean brood size of 2.9 young/pair 1987-2001). Non-breeding pairs were noted on R Clyde at Wolfcrooks, Cambusnethan, Glen Yard (Port Glasgow) and Milton Island (ADW). Other breeding observations: (i) one of the Gartloch Pool pairs was driven off by the other, and walked its brood (b/4) to Hogganfield Loch; (ii) the pair b/2 at Hogganfield Loch had walked their brood from Stepps Pond; (iii) the pair at Springburn Park reared 6 young to full-grown, but 5 of these were taken away by youths (GCC); (iii) a dreadful breeding year was noted on the F&C Canal from Kirkintilloch-Wyndford, with 3 adults shot, one nest robbed of eggs and at least 6 cygnets rescued by Hessilhead; (iv) the pr at North Barwood Pond moved the four cygnets to Colzium Pond across the A803 at Kilsyth on 12 May, later moving them to Townhead Reservoir ?in June?, back on Colzium Pond on 17 Aug (PGC).

Summer moult flocks included 110 on Hogganfield Loch 16 May (ADW), 157 on 16 June (IPG), max 182 on 14 July (CRS), 173 on 23-24 July (GCC), 18 Gadloch 22 June (JJM), and 68 on the Clyde estuary at Langbank on 5 Aug (JTo).

Autumn-winter reports included max 38 R Kelvin mouth, Glasgow in Aug (DJN), 92 Hogganfield Loch 17 Sep, 85 on 4 Oct (GCC), 33 Woodend Loch 16 Nov (IPG), 32 Castle Semple Loch 29 Nov (RSPB), and 33 at Broadwood Loch on 29 Dec (JND,ADW).

A number of pairs appeared to be establishing territories on exposed mud at the lowered Auchendores and Leperstone Reservoirs in spring, but no evidence of actual breeding emerged.

Breeding summary: at least 14 pairs bred on the Clyde estuary, mainly in the Longhaugh Point area, rearing ca 100 young, and at least 3 prs bred inland at the Endrick Mouth, Loch Lomond.

In late summer there was a pre-moult migratory build-up to 232 ads between Longhaugh Point and West Ferry on 8 June, 376 on 24 June (IPG), a max count of 438 ads on 1 July (JTo), still 148 full-grown birds on 10 July, still a cr?che of 29 half-grown young on 4 Aug (IPG), and 24 in Ardmore North Bay on 25 June (AMcN).

Inland autumn reports included a ♀ Balgray Resr 16 July (JSW,VW), an ad and 4 imms Baron's Haugh 19 Aug (JCM), an imm on 2 Sep (GP), and 2 imms on 3-5 Sep (GJB,MMcG). Autumn-winter Clyde estuary reports included 1 N past Cloch Point 12 Aug, return 22 Ardmore Point 16 Sep, 43 on 7 Oct (IPG), 158 on 26 Oct (JTT), 198 on 4 Nov, and 146 on 16 Dec (IPG).

Summer reports involved a pr Gartloch Pool 20 Apr-9 May, ♂ only 16-18 May (GCC), a pr Castle Semple Loch 8 May (RSPB), a pr at Douglas Water on 20 May (ADW), ♂ Gadloch 22 June (JJM), 2 Baron's Haugh 5 July (JCM), 6 Cardross Bay 20 July (PC,JAP-M), 1 Hogganfield Loch 23 July-20 Aug (GCC), and 12 at Endrick Mouth by 31 Aug (JTT).

Autumn return/winter counts included 1 West Ferry 9 Sep (IPG), 1 Aird Meadow 12 Sep, 9 on 29 Sep (RSPB), 107 Endrick Mouth 19 Sep, 232 on 31 Dec (AMcN), 7 Fannyside Lochs 27 Sep (ADW), 134 Baron's Haugh 29 Sep (JCM), 100 on 1 Dec (JJM), 180 at Ardmore Point 2 Oct (AMcN), 259 on 4 Nov, 190 on 16 Dec (IPG).

Breeding summary: 125 broods reported from 63 sites, with mean brood size 4.8/female, suggesting a normal breeding season (cf. a mean annual brood size 4.9/female 1987-2001). Other notes: (i) ♀ b/3 R Kelvin at Botanic Gardens 20 Apr (IA); (ii) ♀ with young brood Hogganfield Pool 30 Apr (GCC).

The only moult flock count received was of 294 on the Clyde estuary, Langbank-Longhaugh Point 24 June (ADW). Autumn-winter reports included 164 Millichen Flood 15 Aug (AMcN), 238 Finlaystone Point 31 Aug (JTo), 200 South Medwin Pools 3 Sep (JSW,VW), 108 Bardowie Loch 18 Sep (AMcN), 120 Fannyside Lochs 27 Sep (ADW), 129 Garvald Quarry 29 Sep (AMcA), max counts 185 Castle Semple Loch 19 Oct and 268 Lochwinnoch Reserve 20 Oct (RSPB), 174 Sallochy 15 Nov (NB), and 145 at the Endrick Mouth on 31 Dec (AMcN).
