Subject - Isle of May Storm Petrels and recent seabird discoveries
The first part of Mark’s talk outlines the recent discovery of the most southerly colony of Storm Petrels on the east coast. Final proof of breeding was uncovered in 2021 after two years of hints and study with further advances made in the last two years. The second part of the evening will cover Avian Influenza and it's impact on Forth seabirds over the last two breeding seasons - both the anguish and the hope.
Speaker - Mark Newell - Mark has worked at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology since November 2004. He is the Field Manager for the long-term seabird fieldwork that is carried out on the Isle of May, which involves ringing and studying a range of species throughout the breeding season with particular interest in their productivity, long-term survival and diet. He has extensive experience of ringing and handling a wide range of seabird species at colonies around Scotland. Prior to UKCEH, Mark worked as a Wildlife Tour Guide specialising in trips to Scottish islands. He has also carried out short term contracts on a wide range of ornithological projects for Scottish Natural Heritage, the RSPB, Fair Isle Bird Observatory, Shetland and the University of Plymouth. He graduated from the University of Plymouth in 1993 with an honours degree in Environmental Science.
