Talk Outline
Welcoming the opportunity to meet SOC Branches and their members, Ruth plans first to offer an introduction to her own experiences and motivation that has led to her current involvement with Club, with reference to some important birds. Then she’ll consider the significance of SOC as a key member of Scotland’s family of wildlife bodies and agencies, before speeding on to discuss, and ask about, the part that Branches play. Having dreamt up the meeting title ages ago, she’s still working on the musical allusion. It’s definitely not just a talk – please bring a pen so that you can add to some of the data she’ll present; and if desired, a preparedness to answer some questions and look towards future priorities and activities. Ruth is looking forward, literally, for the Club and sees this as a great opportunity to meet and hear from you too.
About our Speaker
Elected SOC’s President from 2022, Ruth’s work developed from her early, and lasting, interest in birds. Relevant qualifications led to a career in nature conservation and natural heritage responsibilities. Starting life and work in England she moved to Scotland, specifically the Northern Isles, in 1990 and then to South East Scotland in 2000. She was Area Manager for SNH (now NatureScot) in both locations, overseeing dispersed teams providing local advice and managing National Nature Reserves. Retirement has given her time to further diversify her interests, and to focus once more on her primary interest in birds.
Our Venue
Our new venue is the Renfield St Stephen’s Centre. This is towards the Charing Cross end of Bath Street, close to the King’s Theatre and Charing Cross railway station. Car parking should be available in the adjacent streets once the parking regulation hours have passed.
After some research, the branch committee chose the Renfield St Stephen’s Centre as our new venue. We will need to pay the commercial rate for the hire of the premises, and we will need to supply our own AV equipment. This unfortunately means that we will need to charge an attendance fee to cover the branch expenses. Based on the average number attending meetings at the old venue, it is proposed that we charge an entrance fee of £3. There will be no additional charge for the tea, coffee, and biscuits. The fee will be reduced to £1 for students and for others at the discretion of the committee. It would be very helpful if you could bring with you the exact amount of £3. We do not have any debit card handling facility.
If you know you do not receive branch notices but would like to, you can sign up here. Click to join the SOC .
