PRICE: Free
TIME: 10:00 – 16:00 (approx.)
LEADER: Eddie Williams, who lives in Millport and has local knowledge and experience.
VENUE: Great Cumbrae is one of Scotland's most accessible islands, just a 10-minute ferry ride from Largs on the mainland.
Arrive at Largs Ferry Terminal (Grid ref NS 202596, Post code KA30 8BG) in time to catch the 10.15 ferry. Tickets cost £4.00 return for foot passengers and can be bought either online or in the terminal building. Tickets are not available on the ferry. Ferries run every 15 minutes.
Meet the leader Eddie Williams at Cumbrae Slip.
TRAVELLING: There is a direct train from Glasgow to Largs (56 minutes), then a 5-minute walk from the train station to the ferry terminal. If coming by car, there is a large car park on the seafront beside the ferry terminal (£5 for over 3 hours). There is free on-street parking away from the town centre (eg Charles Street or Broomfield Place).
We encourage car-sharing, so if you are willing to offer a lift, or would like a lift, please contact Zul Bhatia ([email protected]). to arrange.
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: Great Cumbrae has a variety of habitats, so we should see a range of marine, coastal and inland birds, including sea ducks like Eider, Shelduck and Red-breasted Merganser, gulls of several species, other seabirds such as Gannet and Shag, waders such as Oystercatcher and Redshank, and passerines such as Rock Pipit, Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler. These are just some examples - we are likely to see many more!
BOOKING INFO: There is no requirement to book, but it would be helpful to have an indication of numbers a few days in advance. Please contact Zul Bhatia ([email protected]).
TERRAIN: We will walk anticlockwise around the island from the ferry slip to Millport, which is about five miles, on a flat and relatively quiet tarmac road by the sea. Given fair weather, there are good views of Cowal, Bute and Arran, and even Ailsa Craig.
OPTICS: Binoculars are essential and a telescope would be useful for seawatching.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy boots and suitable outdoor clothing. A check of the weather forecast is advisable.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A café and toilets are available at Fintry Bay, halfway round, about lunchtime. There is a picnic area for those who bring a packed lunch. Millport has plenty of facilities for eating and drinking. There is a bus every 15 minutes from Millport back to the ferry slip.
NB: This outing may be postponed due to poor weather. Please check SOC Clyde branch website (www.birdsinclyde.scot) and Clyde Birding on Twitter in advance.
