PRICE: Free
TIME: 11:00 - 16:00 (approx.), depending on the weather, but you are free to leave earlier!
High tide is about 13.00.
VENUE: Musselburgh Lagoons and sea wall - meet at the Musselburgh lagoons car park at the small loch on Levenhall Links.
TRAVELLING:
In this case, public transport is unlikely to be a viable option.
By car:
Suggest allowing around 90 minutes from the middle of Glasgow via the M8/ Edinburgh City By-pass (A720).
CAR SHARING:
In the light of climate change and the cost of living, we should try to share cars as much as possible. Having too many cars can also make parking awkward where there is little parking space. If those attending could let the outings organiser know if they are willing to offer a lift, or would like a lift, and are willing to share their contact details with people who offer or want a lift, it may be possible to arrange car sharing. Hogganfield car park is a suggested rendezvous point. Contact email on Outings page.
Quickest route:
From city bypass take A1 eastbound then after 1.5 miles turn north off A1 at Wallyford junction A6094; through Wallyford then left at roundabout on to A199 westbound.
At next roundabout turn right on to the B1348 to Levenhall Links. After leaving the 30mph limit, it's the next turning on the left. Parts of this road are not in a good condition.
Route via toilets: From the east end of the city bypass, take B6415 signposted Musselburgh. Café and toilets available at Tesco Musselburgh, or the public toilets in Musselburgh are half way along the main street then left down a narrow lane towards the River Esk where there is parking.
From the centre of Musselburgh, go east past the racecourse to the roundabout then left on to the B1348 to Levenhall Links. After leaving the 30mph limit, it's the next turning on the left. Parts of this road are not in a good condition.
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: Waders such as Bar-tailed Godwit, Grey Plover, Knot and Dunlin. Sea duck such as Common and Velvet Scoter, Eider, Long-tailed duck, Slavonian Grebe, and auks.
OPTICS: Binoculars essential for lagoons. Telescope will be useful for watching waders and ducks. If you have one, please bring it along.
BOOKING INFO: We are not asking people to book, but it might be helpful for the outings organiser to have an indication of numbers a day or two in advance.
TERRAIN:
After viewing the lagoons, we shall walk along the sea wall and view the Forth estuary.
The walking will be mostly on level ground, with hard or gravel surfaces but with some muddy patches.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Stout boots/shoes for footwear, Wellington boots will not be necessary. Can be cold and exposed to the weather so bring warm waterproof clothing.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A check of the weather forecast beforehand is advisable.
NB: May be postponed due to poor weather. Check this page, SOC website and Clyde Birding on Twitter in advance.
EV charging station in Wallyford Park and Ride car park, including two rapid chargers and a number of slower ones, and one rapid charger in Shorthope St, Musselburgh near the public toilets, or two 22kW chargers in Station Road near to Tesco.
