Culter Glen, South Lanarkshire
Saturday 17th June 2023

PRICE: Free

TIME:  10:30 - approx. 15:30

VENUE:
A small parking area between Culter Allers Farm and Birthwood Farm.
Postcode of Birthwood Farm for Sat Nav ML12 6QB
Parking grid reference - NT0309431209

BOOKING INFO: We are not asking participants to book, but if many people turn up, we may have to split into smaller groups.

TERRAIN: Walk along the tarred very quiet single track road which follows the Culter Water for 2.4 miles to Coulter Dam head (NT0381027490).
Opportunity to have a seat and a coffee or packed lunch there and scan the reservoir for Osprey and the adjacent hillside for raptors.
Return by the same route back to the parking area.

OPTICS: Binoculars essential; it's quite a long way to carry a scope.

FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Walking boots ideally, and appropriate clothing for the conditions.
NB: May be postponed due to poor weather. Check this page, SOC website and Clyde Birding on Twitter in advance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The walk will be led by Scott Black, who knows the area well. There is a gentle incline of only 100 metres from the parking place to the dam head.
No toilet facilities close by, the nearest being in the Welcome Break Abington service station at junction 13 on the M74.
The pace of the walk will be fairly relaxed and the ambience informal, with discussion and questions encouraged. The outing is suitable for birdwatchers of all levels.
Please bring a packed lunch.

Bird species which Scott has recorded in the area and with a bit of luck we may see:
Whinchat
Stonechat
Wheatear
Redstart (outside chance; they nest in a wood on the way up}
Cuckoo
Ring Ouzel
Raven
Dipper
Grey Wagtail
Common Sandpiper
Nuthatch
Crossbill
Kestrel
Buzzard
Meadow Pipit
Stock Dove
and other common birds
