Outing to:
Inchcailloch, Loch Lomond
Wednesday 27th April 2022
Wednesday 27th April 2022
PRICE: Free
TIME: 09:30 - approx. 15:00
VENUE:
Meet at the National Park visitor centre in the Balmaha car park (Grid Ref NS421909; Post Code G63 0JQ). There are toilet facilities at the centre. Note that the car park is now Pay & Display. We will then walk the short distance to Macfarlane’s boatyard where we will board the boat to the island.
See https://www.balmahaboatyard.co.uk/ferrytoinchcailleoch.htm for details of the boat trip.
BOOKING INFO: We are not asking participants to book, but if many people turn up, we may have to split into smaller groups. Be prepared to pay for the boat fare, at present £7.50 return, and have the correct coins to pay the car park charge of £3.20 for an all-day ticket.
TERRAIN: Mostly gravel paths, but with many steps which need a reasonable degree of fitness, although it would be possible to avoid most of the steps by sticking to the central paths across the island and not climbing to the summit.
OPTICS: Binoculars essential; scope may have limited use amongst the trees.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Walking boots ideally, and appropriate clothing for the conditions.
NB: May be postponed due to poor weather. Check this page, SOC website and Clyde Birding on Twitter in advance.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The walk will be led by Ian Fulton, who knows the area well. The pace of the walk will be fairly relaxed and the ambience informal, with discussion and questions encouraged. The outing is suitable for birdwatchers of all levels.
There is a composting toilet at the south-west end of the island. Drinks and food are available in Balmaha but not on Inchcailloch. Please bring a packed lunch.
We hope to see a variety of woodland birds including spring migrants, and some water birds too. Ospreys are often seen fishing over Balmaha Bay and Net Bay. At this time of year, there is a stunning show of Bluebells in the Inchcailloch woods and we may glimpse the Fallow Deer which inhabit the island.
COVID-19 precautions
In order to keep everyone safe, our walks will be run in accordance with Scottish Government guidelines in place at the time. Please do not attend if you (or anyone in your household) have any Covid-like symptoms.
