Black Grouse Watch - Saturday 12th April and 19th April 2025
The SOC in partnership with the MOD are conducting a Black Grouse watch
Date: Saturday 12th April and 19th April 2025
Time: Between 0600-0800hrs.
Where: Garelochhead Training Area
Parking at: NS257 904.
What3Words: select.smug.conquests
Cost: This event is FREE, there’s no need to book, drop in or stay for as long as you like.
Terrain: The short walk is on a tarmac surface
Facilities: Please note that there are NO toilets.
Transport & Parking: There is NO public transport to this location but there is FREE car parking on site. Please watch out for a couple of potholes at the entrance gate and note that military training will be ongoing in other areas of the estate.
Our Black Grouse Watch will be conducted with an emphasis on responsible birding of a sensitive species.
Experienced birders and telescopes will be on hand to show you the birds.
Further information: Do read this recent PR piece about these birds. This achieved local and national news coverage. We’ll hopefully see some more of the species which characterise this moorland habitat. This piece on the STV website has an MOD video too which is worth a watch with your sound up!
On the second Saturday, 19th April, why not combine this with a visit to the Glasgow Peregrine Project watch will be conducted on the same day. Meet the SOC and RSPB team just outside the University Library and Hunterian Art Gallery from 1000-1200hrs.
Looking forward to seeing you
