During the first part of the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, being unable to drive anywhere, Zul Bhatia did a lot of bird watching in Renfrewshire, in and around his home village of Lochwinnoch on the banks of Castle Semple Loch and the River Calder.  With a few volunteers to assist him he set about finding evidence of birds breeding in Lochwinnoch.  Read more about what they found when locked down in Lochwinnoch.

Comparisons are made against similar bird lists made over the past 100 years, with trends and changes described and discussed. A few observations of unusual and rarely seen species are included. The Birds of Glasgow Botanic Gardens is from the Glasgow Naturalist and authored by Chris McInerny.

A sick Ivory Gull rescued from a garden in Dumfries and Galloway draws a large crowd after it is returned to good health at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Centre. Over a hundred people watched the release of this rare high-arctic gull in Ayrshire. Click here to read.

​ Eleven young people interested in birds together with some facilitators met in November 2018 in Glasgow with the general aim of aim of how can SOC reach more young birders? Fruitful discussions led to the birth of SOC Youth Connect and a closed Facebook page was launched soon afterwards. Read more here.
