Wall-nesting Sand Martins near Bothwell

SOC / SWT outing to Armore Point

A large group of 32 people attended this outing, 31 species were recorded with highlights being 73 Great Crested Grebes and 25 Red-throated Divers. Unfortunately, only the leader, Sandy McNeil, saw the Slavonian Grebe. Read about the outing here.

Click here to read Hayley Douglas and Hannah Riley's article from Scottish Birds (2018) which documents their work during a two year project using satellite tracking technology to track Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Using the data received their aim was to change perceptions about this often misunderstood bird.

​Jimmy Maxwell shows us some examples of small birds using nests of other species.  Illustrated with photos, we see a Wren using an old Swallow nest and also a Long-tailed Tit nest.  A Spotted Flycatcher is using and old Swallow nest too.  Click here to read the article.

Breeding Ring-necked Parakeets in Glasgow

The first proved breeding of Ring-necked Parakeets in Scotland occurred at Victoria Park, Glasgow in 2017. Birds had been seen prospecting a nest site the previous year. Susan Harris closely monitored the birds in 2017 and Chris McInerny brings us up to date with the developments in this article.

Floating island breeding success

Bird ID: Linnet and Twite

Linnet and Twite are small, seeding-eating finches which occur widely in Scotland through the year. For those of us who live away from the Highlands and Islands, the best chance of seeing Twite is along the coast in winter. This short article gives some hints of how to tell these two sometimes nondescript species apart.  ​
