Talk Subject - My patch on the Eaglesham Moor - Shieldhill Farm.
After first visiting Shieldhill in 2011, I started recording the birds and wildlife on the farm, and soon it became the birding patch I visited the most. Starting from scratch as a young birder, an early target of recording 100+ bird species was soon surpassed and as time went on I learned more about the other wildlife on the farm. In the early days I got to grips with what species were breeding (and sadly no longer breeding), passing through and wintering on the farm and after a few years I became increasingly interested in the wading birds present. With breeding Curlew, Lapwing, Snipe, Redshank and Oystercatcher it was a great patch to watch and learn, following nests and broods as part of the BTO’s Nest Record Scheme. In more recent years, since 2022, working with colleagues from the Clyde Ringing Group, we have been ringing waders in the winter, focussing on Woodcock, Snipe and Jack Snipe. We have now ringed over 350 individuals and are building a picture of how these species are using the farm. 14 years on and there is still more to find out and discover but come along and let me show you what we’ve uncovered so far.
Speaker - Stephen Inglis
Stephen works for RSPB Scotland where he has helped deliver conservation projects working on peatlands and farmland breeding waders, in East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire since 2019. He has been a keen birder from a young age, with a particular interest in monitoring nesting birds, and more recently become a ringer. From Kilmarnock originally, he now lives Eaglesham and spends most of his spare time at his relative’s farm in East Renfrewshire, which we will hear about in his talk.
