Subject - Results of the 2023 Hen Harrier survey
The Hen Harrier was widespread in the UK before the mid-1800s, but subsequent combinations of habitat loss, land use change, and persecution triggered extensive declines. Following a promising period of population recovery between the 1940s and 1980s, reported sharp declines in parts of the UK initiated the launch of the national Hen Harrier Survey in 1988-89. But since then, how have Hen Harriers been faring in Scotland and the rest of the UK? In this talk, RSPB present the results from the latest national Hen Harrier Survey in 2023, revealing the estimated breeding Hen Harrier population in the UK, constituent countries and Scottish regions, and population change over the six surveys to date since 1988-89. The national survey involves multiple partners and within Scotland includes RSPB, NatureScot and the Scottish Raptor Study Group.
Speaker - Dr Leah Kelly is a Conservation Scientist within the RSPB Centre for Conservation Science Monitoring team. Based at the Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh, Leah works on a range of monitoring projects including coordination of national bird surveys, supports Policy and Advocacy colleagues within RSPB, and is a member of the BTO/RSPB/JNCC Breeding Bird Survey steering group. Leah previously studied upland waders, primarily in the Peak District National Park, for her PhD with the South West Peak Landscape Partnership.
