VENUES: Kinneil is a tidal lagoon and there are extensive mudflats at the mouth of the river Avon where it joins the Forth. Turn north off A904 Grangemouth to Bo'ness road at Grid ref NS96868033 and park near the sewage works at NS961811 [Google Maps link]. We will meet here at 08:45.
After lunch we will move to the Bothkennar Pools at Skinflats. These are brackish pools with reedbeds and adjoining saltmarsh. Turn off the A905 onto the Newton Road on the north side of the River Carron at NS910823; there is limited parking space further along the road at NS914828. [Google Maps Link]. We may also visit RSPB Skinflats at NS920859. [Google Maps Link]
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: Passage waders, breeding Warblers, possibly Cetti’s Warbler.
TRAVELLING:
By car: It is difficult to reach these sites by public transport, so lifts will be needed for those without a car. If you would like to car-share, meet at 07:45 at Hogganfield Loch car park, Grid Ref NS 638 671 Postcode G33 1QB so that we can drive to the outing in fewer cars.
Public transport from Glasgow City Centre to Hogganfield includes First Bus no.38 (to Royston Road/Cumbernauld Road) and First Bus no.19 (to Mossbank Drive). It is about 30 minutes’ drive from Hogganfield to Kinneil. If you can offer a lift, or would like a lift, please indicate this on the booking form.
Otherwise, if travelling independently, meet us at the parking spot near the sewage works noted above - at 08:45
TERRAIN: The walking will be on level ground with no serious obstacles.
OPTICS: Binoculars are essential and a telescope would be very useful for birds on the pools and mudflats.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing. It is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand.
