VENUE: Meet in the car park at WWT Caerlaverock, Eastpark Farm, Dumfriesshire, DG1 4RS (Grid ref NY051656, Google maps link). What3Words: altitude.rotations.generals We will explore the reserve at a leisurely pace, making the most of all the hides and viewing towers. If time allows, we may also visit Mersehead.
TRAVELLING: It is about 2 hours’ drive from Glasgow, and we encourage car-sharing. Those without a car could be met at Carmyle railway station, which is very close to the M74. There is a direct train from Dalmuir via Partick and Glasgow Central (to Whifflet) which arrives at Carmyle at 08:17. If you are willing to offer a lift, or would like a lift, please indicate this on the booking form.
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: A range of waders and wildfowl, including flocks of wintering Whooper Swans and Barnacle Geese, and raptors such as Peregrine, Hen Harrier and Merlin.
TERRAIN: Mostly tarmac and gravel paths. It may be rather muddy due to flooding.
OPTICS: Binoculars are essential and a telescope would be very useful.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing. It is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Toilets and shelter are available in the visitor hub, but there is no café, so please bring a packed lunch and a warm drink.
