VENUE: Loch Leven National Nature Reserve supports internationally important populations of wintering and breeding wildfowl. It is fringed with diverse wetland and woodland habitats and has good trails and hides. For more information see https://www.rspb.org.uk/days-out/reserves/loch-leven. TRAVELLING:
Meet at 07:45 at Hogganfield Loch car park, Grid Ref NS 638 671 Postcode G33 1QB so that we can drive to RSPB Loch Leven in fewer cars.
Public transport from Glasgow City Centre to Hogganfield includes First Bus no.38 (to Royston Road/Cumbernauld Road) and First Bus no.19 (to Mossbank Drive).
From Hogganfield Loch, it is about 1 hour’s drive to Loch Leven. When booking, please state whether you would like to be a driver or a passenger.
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: A range of waders and wildfowl, including flocks of wintering Whooper Swans, a variety of woodland birds and perhaps some early spring migrants.
TERRAIN:The main paths along the lochside are well-surfaced and level. There is an option to climb up the hill through woodland on steep, muddy paths.
OPTICS: Binoculars essential and a telescope will be useful for distant birds.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy boots and warm, waterproof clothing. It is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Please bring a packed lunch. The café and shop in the visitor hub are open 10:00 – 16:00; the toilets are open 24h.
