GETTING THERE BY CAR: By car it is about an hour’s drive from central Glasgow, along the M74 to Junction 13.
Parking grid reference - NT0309431209
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There is no public transport, so we will need lifts for those without a car. If you are willing to offer a lift, or would like a lift, and are happy for your contact details to be shared, please contact Ania Owsianka in good time.
BOOKING INFO: There is no requirement to book, but it would be helpful to know if you are intending to come. Please contact Ania Owsianka.
TERRAIN: Culter Glen is an upland area that is surprisingly rich in birdlife. We will walk slowly along the very quiet single-track road which follows the Culter Water for 2.4 miles to Coulter Dam (NT0381027490). There is a gentle incline of only 100 metres from the parking place to the dam head.
Here we can sit down to have our packed lunch and scan the reservoir for Osprey and the adjacent hillside for raptors. We return by the same route to the cars.
OPTICS: Binoculars essential; it's quite a long way to carry a scope.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing for the conditions. It is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand.
NB: May be postponed due to poor weather. Check this page, SOC website and Clyde Birding on Twitter in advance.
OUTING LEADER: The walk will be led by Scott Black, who knows the area well.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Please bring a packed lunch.
No toilet facilities close by, the nearest being in the Welcome Break Abington service station at junction 13 on the M74.
The pace of the walk will be fairly relaxed and the ambience informal, with discussion and questions encouraged. The outing is suitable for birdwatchers of all levels.
BIRD SPECIES WE HOPE TO SEE: Culter Glen is the best place in Clyde to see the scarce Ring Ouzel. It is also good habitat for Common Sandpiper, Whinchat, Stonechat, Wheatear, Dipper, Spotted Flycatcher, Cuckoo, Osprey and other raptors.
