PRICE: The normal adult entry fee is £4.50, but this is reduced to £3.80 each for a group of 12 or more. WWT members go free.
TIME: 10:00 – 17:00. These are the opening hours of the reserve.
LEADER: Donald Wilson
VENUE: Meet in the car park at WWT Caerlaverock, Eastpark Farm, Dumfriesshire, DG1 4RS (Grid ref NY051656). After an introductory welcome from one of the wardens, we will walk around the reserve at a leisurely pace, making the most of all the hides and viewing towers.
BOOKING: Please contact Ania Owsianka ([email protected]). To get the group discount, we must book ahead as a group.
TRAVELLING: It is about 2 hours’ drive from Glasgow, and we would encourage car-sharing. Lifts are also requested for those without a car, who could be met at Carmyle railway station, which is very close to the M74. There is a direct train from Dalmuir via Partick and Glasgow Central which arrives at Carmyle at 08:17. If you are willing to offer a lift, or would like a lift, please contact Ania Owsianka ([email protected]).
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: Large numbers of waders and wildfowl, including flocks of wintering Whooper Swans and Barnacle Geese, and possibly raptors such as Peregrine Falcon and Hen Harrier.
TERRAIN: Mostly tarmac and gravel paths. It may be rather muddy due to flooding.
OPTICS: Binoculars are essential and a telescope would be very useful.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing. It is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Toilets, warm drinks and cakes are available in the visitor hub, but please bring a packed lunch.
NB: This outing may be postponed due to poor weather. Please check SOC Clyde branch website (www.birdsinclyde.scot) and Clyde Birding on X (Twitter) in advance.
