TIME: 11:00 – 15:30
LEADER: Zul Bhatia
VENUE: Meet at the car park towards the south end of Fairlie, KA29 0EW (Grid Ref NS207546) marked Fairlie Viewpoint on Google Maps. We will view Fairlie Sands from here, then drive to nearby Southannan Sands, followed by Hunterston Sands, and finally the road end car park.
TRAVELLING: There is an hourly train from Glasgow to Fairlie Station, which is 5 minutes’ walk from the meeting point. By car it takes about 50 minutes from central Glasgow. If you are coming by car and are willing to offer a lift, or if you would like a lift, and are happy for your contact details to be shared, please contact Ania Owsianka ([email protected]). Those who come by train will need a lift from one coastal viewing point to the next, and then back to Fairlie.
BIRDS WE HOPE TO SEE: A good variety of waders, seabirds, wildfowl and gulls. The area is perhaps the best wintering site in Scotland for Greenshank, and Pintail are often present.
TERRAIN: Tarmac and gravel paths, all on level ground.
OPTICS: Binoculars are essential and a telescope would be very useful.
FOOTWEAR and CLOTHING: Sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing. It is advisable to check the weather forecast beforehand.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Please bring a packed lunch and a warm drink. Toilets, drinks and food are available in Morrisons, Largs KA30 8JR.
NB: This outing may be postponed due to poor weather. Please check SOC Clyde branch website (www.birdsinclyde.scot) and Clyde Birding on X (Twitter) in advance.
